Juneteenth Groundbreaking for African-American Memorial

Kendleton, TX – On June 19, 2024, Fort Bend County marked a significant milestone with the groundbreaking ceremony for the African-American Memorial at Bates Allen Park in Kendleton. This event, held on Juneteenth, celebrates the union of two historic Black cemeteries and aims to honor the African-American heritage in the region.

The memorial project, which received an initial $4 million investment from Fort Bend County, seeks to restore and preserve the Oak Hill and Newman Chapel Cemeteries. These cemeteries are integral to the history of the African-American community in Fort Bend County, reflecting the legacy of freedmen who settled in the area post-Civil War.

The project will feature walking trails, reflection areas, and interpretive exhibits that highlight the contributions and struggles of the Black community.

Commissioner Dexter McCoy emphasized the importance of this project during the groundbreaking ceremony. “Sadly, this site where we stand – this sacred, hallowed ground – is not reflective of the stature befitting of those buried here and the rich story they are part of. Many of their tombstones have been forever lost, and so now it is our responsibility to pay due homage,” said McCoy.

The memorial will also include a Juneteenth Freedom Plaza and various educational displays to ensure that future generations understand and appreciate the history of African-Americans in the region. The design of the memorial includes two central axes: one pointing towards Africa, symbolizing the ancestral homeland, and the other towards Sugar Land, home to the unmarked graves discovered in 2018, known as the Sugar Land 95.

County Judge KP George also highlighted the project’s significance, stating, “The memorial will not only acknowledge the struggles of the past but also celebrate the achievements and contributions of African-Americans who helped shape our county.”

This project is a testament to Fort Bend County’s commitment to preserving its rich and diverse cultural heritage. The community eagerly anticipates the completion of the memorial, which will serve as a vital educational and reflective space for all residents.
